India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for greater representation and influence for countries across the Global South, arguing that many nations are affected by international decisions despite having little say in how they are made.

Opening the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Modi urged leaders to push for major reforms to the global governance system and create a more balanced international order.

He said countries in the Global South should have a stronger voice in institutions and decision-making processes that shape the global economy, security and international affairs.

Modi criticised what he described as a "pyramid of privilege", arguing that the existing international system gives disproportionate influence to a limited number of countries.

He called instead for a system based on greater equality, representation and cooperation among nations.

The comments come as BRICS seeks to strengthen its role as a platform representing emerging economies and developing nations. The grouping has expanded its membership in recent years, increasing its influence across a broader range of regions.

India has positioned itself as a leading voice for developing countries, frequently calling for reforms to international institutions to better reflect the changing balance of economic and political power.

Modi's remarks are expected to feature prominently during discussions at the New Delhi summit, where leaders are addressing issues including global economic cooperation, development, trade and international governance.

The summit also highlights India's efforts to strengthen cooperation among developing economies while advocating for a greater role for the Global South in international decision-making.

The call for reform reflects growing pressure from emerging economies for changes to global institutions that were largely established in a different geopolitical era.

Modi said the countries most affected by international decisions should have a meaningful opportunity to help shape them, reinforcing India's push for a more inclusive global governance framework.
