Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso will continue racing for Aston Martin in 2027 after the team confirmed an unchanged driver lineup for next season.

The decision ends speculation over Alonso's immediate future in Formula One and ensures the Spaniard will remain on the grid beyond his 46th birthday next July.

Alonso said he had taken time to consider his future before deciding to continue with the team.

"Racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level," Alonso said.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to Aston Martin's long-term ambitions, expressing confidence in the team's leadership, personnel, technical facilities and development plans.

"I truly believe in what we are building," he said.

Alonso will continue alongside Lance Stroll, the son of Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll. The 2027 season will mark the pair's fifth consecutive year as teammates.

Alonso joined Aston Martin in 2023 after a career that has included world championship victories with Renault in 2005 and 2006. Since moving to the team, he has secured eight podium finishes, including two second-place results.

However, Aston Martin has endured a difficult 2026 campaign. The team has struggled for competitiveness and has scored only three championship points from the opening 15 rounds, all of them earned by Alonso. Aston Martin currently sits 10th in the 11-team constructors' championship.

Alonso had previously indicated that he was considering his options, including potentially taking on a different role within Aston Martin if the team believed his contribution would be more valuable elsewhere.

The veteran driver had also discussed other challenges outside Formula One, including a possible return to the Indianapolis 500 or participation in the Dakar Rally.

For Alonso, however, age has not been the determining factor in deciding whether to continue racing.

"Age is not a problem. It's just the motivation, the fun, what remains to be achieved," he said.

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll said retaining two experienced drivers would provide valuable knowledge as the team seeks to improve its competitiveness and eventually challenge for championships.

The team's immediate priority remains improving its on-track performance, but Stroll said he believes Aston Martin has the personnel and resources required to pursue its longer-term ambitions.

Alonso's decision means one of Formula One's most experienced and successful drivers will remain part of the championship as Aston Martin continues its effort to establish itself among the sport's leading teams.
