Barcelona Sign Gabriel Jesus From Arsenal

Barcelona have completed the signing of Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, with Spanish media reporting that the Catalan club paid around €10 million ($11.6 million) for the 29-year-old.

Jesus has signed a contract with the Spanish champions through to 2029 after Barcelona turned to the former Manchester City striker when their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez failed.

Barcelona confirmed the transfer in a statement, saying they had reached an agreement with Arsenal for the Brazilian striker.

Jesus becomes the latest addition to an attacking line that has undergone significant changes this summer following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

Barcelona had spent much of the transfer window attempting to sign Alvarez, but Atletico Madrid were unwilling to negotiate with their domestic rivals, forcing the Catalan club to consider other options.

Jesus said he had no problem with being viewed as an alternative to Alvarez and described his move to Barcelona as the fulfilment of a long-held ambition.

"I'm not offended," Jesus said when asked about Barcelona initially preferring Alvarez.

"I have the chance to be here at Barcelona. I had a chance 10 years ago, and life took me in another direction, but now I can be here, and it's a dream for me."

The Brazilian added that he was determined to make the most of the opportunity.

"I always want to do the best I can. I'm a guy who works hard, I know my qualities, but work, I think, always pays off."

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick welcomed the signing, saying Jesus' style and experience should complement the club's attacking approach.

Flick said he was surprised the opportunity to sign the Brazilian had become available but expressed his enthusiasm about working with him.

"I really love him. I like his style to play football. It fits with our style," Flick said after Barcelona's 5-2 La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano.

"I think he can help us a lot in the games. For us, he can be important."

Flick also praised sporting director Deco for helping secure the transfer.

Jesus arrives at Camp Nou looking to revive his career after a difficult spell with Arsenal. A serious knee injury suffered in January 2025 disrupted his progress at the Premier League club and contributed to him falling down manager Mikel Arteta's attacking pecking order.

With Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres ahead of him, Jesus found opportunities increasingly limited at Arsenal.

He scored 32 goals during four seasons with the London club after establishing himself as a prolific forward at Manchester City, where he netted 95 times across six seasons.

Jesus insisted that his recent injury problems were behind him and that he was physically ready for the demands of playing for Barcelona.

"The last two years have been a little tough for me, but apart from that, everyone knows my quality," he said.

"The knee is no longer a problem. I recovered very well and returned to playing very well with Arsenal."

He added: "My knee and my body are fine, I'm ready to give my best."

Jesus is Barcelona's seventh signing of the summer, joining Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Jesse Bisiwu, Joao Cancelo, Rodri and Dominik Livakovic as the club's new arrivals.
